Workshop team leadership and fleet availability are the responsibilities of this Arriva assistant manager. You’ll support depot budgets, staff development and safe engineering delivery against TfL, Arriva and DVSA requirements. A heavy-vehicle engineering background and team-supervision capability are required, with apprenticeship, vocational or degree routes described as ideal. The permanent, full-time Thornton Heath role has duties requiring expected depot attendance, subject to confirmation; trade-union partnership experience is required.
What You'll Work On
- Supervise depot engineering teams and allocate workshop workloads, coordinating safe maintenance and vehicle availability against service requirements and statutory standards.
- Monitor fleet reliability and engineering performance, targeting breakdowns and lost mileage and developing preventative-maintenance improvements with the Engineering Manager.
- Maintain work records, safety and quality controls, coordinating parts, equipment and contractor activity to support efficient and compliant workshop operations.
- Develop engineering colleagues through briefings, performance management and training, supporting staff matters and deputising for the Engineering Manager when required.
What They Are Looking For
- Experience: Strong heavy-vehicle, machinery or equipment maintenance, repair and overhaul experience; bus or HGV knowledge is preferred.
- Qualification: A recognised apprenticeship, relevant vocational qualification or engineering degree or diploma is the described ideal route.
- Domain: Good health-and-safety knowledge and the ability to lead safe workshop practices.
- Stakeholder: Team supervision, clear communication, attention to detail and work under pressure.
- Experience: Experience working with trade-union representatives.
