Key Notes
CSWIP 3.1 or an equivalent welding-inspection qualification is essential, as is practical application of BS EN ISO 17637 visual testing. The work covers safety-critical rolling stock before, during and after welding, with non-conformance reporting and assurance packs under BS EN 15085 and ISO 3834. Based at Acton Depot and other TfL sites, the permanent post pays circa £58,000 without visa sponsorship.
What You'll Work On
- Inspect welding before, during and after production against approved test plans, procedures, engineering specifications and the applicable inspection standards.
- Interpret NDT reports and engineering drawings, identify corrective actions and produce dimensional evidence and non-conformance reports for the quality system.
- Compile and verify quality documentation and conduct surveillance audits against BS EN 15085, ISO 3834 and the Welding Control Manual.
- Witness welder qualification tests under ISO 9606 and coach welding personnel to improve quality and maintain the required standards of competence.
Why This Role Matters
- Safety-critical rolling stock receives independent inspection evidence against welding standards, allowing non-conformances to be identified and corrective action specified during the repair process.
- Welding personnel receive qualification checks and feedback through witnessed tests and surveillance audits, helping managers judge whether the team meets the workshop’s required welding standards.
What They Are Looking For
- Qualification: CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector certification or a recognised equivalent appropriate to the role is essential.
- Technical: Working knowledge and practical application of BS EN ISO 17637 visual weld testing are essential.
- Qualification: A Level 4 engineering or fabrication/welding qualification, relevant engineering experience or equivalent inspection/assurance industry experience is sought.
- Preferred: ISO 9712 NDT certification, previous welding qualifications and rail or large-scale manufacturing knowledge are desirable.
- Eligibility: UK right to work is required; sponsorship is unavailable.
