Payments architecture is the focus of this Principal Engineer role, combining technical direction with design reviews, targeted delivery and external-provider integrations. Relevant expertise includes payments experience spanning PSPs, gateways, acquirers and EMV, plus distributed systems and senior technical leadership across teams. AWS is preferred, as are transit-payments and card-scheme familiarity. UK-remote work or optional London hybrid working is available.
What You'll Work On
- Set the architecture, standards and engineering practices for Masabi’s payments platform across payment flows and external provider integrations.
- Design scalable, secure, resilient and cost-efficient payment services aligned with Masabi’s wider platform direction and approved architecture standards.
- Guide engineering teams toward modern microservices while balancing immediate delivery with long-term platform health and system evolution.
- Review designs and contribute targeted implementation work on scalability, resilience, operational performance and complex payment problems.
- Coordinate technical alignment with payment providers and partners and contribute to roadmaps, scoping, documentation and engineering forums.

What They Are Looking For
- Experience: Strong payment-system experience involving PSPs, gateways, EMV, contactless EMV or acquirers is sought.
- Technical: Payment flows, transaction lifecycles, distributed systems, microservices and cloud-platform experience are sought; AWS is preferred.
- Experience: Principal or Staff-level technical leadership across multiple teams or domains is sought.
- Experience: Contributions to engineering standards, architecture patterns or platform direction are sought.
- Preferred: Transit payments, card schemes or complex multi-service or event-driven architecture experience is advantageous.
- Preferred: Kotlin, Java, DynamoDB, MySQL, Terraform or GitLab CI/CD exposure is advantageous.
