Permanent night work at Glasgow Depot combines rolling stock fault diagnosis with technical support to outstations and trains in service; Alstom does not expect candidates to have every listed skill. Pay is around £52,000. The role involves lone and wayside working and travel at short notice to sites within three hours' driving distance. Railway operations knowledge is required; PTS and Designated Persons training can be provided.
What You'll Work On
- Diagnose in-service vehicle faults using Train Management System data, laptop diagnostic software, complex electrical schematics and cable books at depots and outstations.
- Provide overnight technical advice to maintenance suppliers and the Service Delivery Centre, including support for failed vehicles and rescue or recovery incidents.
- Record defects, fleet checks and campaigns in SAP GSI, and prepare technical reports for fleet managers on faults and safety concerns.
Why This Role Matters
- Trains that fail in service require rapid technical decisions; the diagnostic findings and communication with the Service Delivery Centre inform the repair response.
- Fleet managers need evidence from Safety of the Line incidents and repeat faults, including technical reports from outstations and the affected vehicles.
What They Are Looking For
- Qualification: Engineering apprenticeship training and an HNC in mechanical or electrical engineering, or equivalent, are sought.
- Eligibility: A full UK driving licence is sought for travel to outstations.
- Domain: Prior railway operations knowledge is required; Personal Track Safety and Designated Persons training can be provided.
- Technical: Ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics is sought.
- Preferred: Rolling stock industry experience is desirable.
