Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer (Thermal Runaway)

Vertical Aerospace Bristol, United KingdomOn-SiteFull Time

Key Notes

Battery safety hardware is the focus of this full-time Energy Storage position in Bristol. You will connect thermal runaway testing with mechanical design and qualification work, owning a related component through design review. A relevant engineering degree is requested; thermal runaway experience is desirable, with strong electro-mechanical design capability central to selection.

What You'll Work On

  • Support thermal runaway tests at cell, module and pack levels, analysing results to inform subsequent simulation, design and manufacturing decisions.
  • Develop containment designs with stress, quality and test colleagues, owning a battery-safety component through testing and Critical Design Review.
  • Define verification approaches and qualification evidence for materials and processes, producing CAD, drawings and controlled product data for engineering reviews.

Why This Role Matters

  • Valo’s battery certification depends on evidence about thermal runaway behaviour, connecting physical test results to the mechanical measures intended to limit propagation and consequences.
  • Novel containment materials need appropriate qualification evidence before design approval, making the relationship between manufacturing processes, test coverage and component requirements particularly consequential.

What They Are Looking For

  • Experience: Relevant experience includes mechanical design of complex electro-mechanical systems; battery experience is highly desirable.
  • Technical: Relevant technical capabilities include CAD/PLM, HV-pack engineering considerations, DFMEA and GD&T.
  • Qualification: Relevant qualifications include mechanical, aerospace or related engineering degree.
  • Preferred: Preferred attributes include thermal runaway testing, mitigation or simulation, alongside Dassault 3DX/CATIA and certification experience.
