Public Transport Planner

AtkinsRéalis UK Limited London; Birmingham; Bristol; Liverpool; York; Belfast; Cambridge; Edinburgh; Manchester; Epsom, United KingdomHybridFull Time

Key Notes

Bus reform, franchising and public-transport investment shape this planning remit, from BRT feasibility to mobility hubs and interchange business cases. The post seeks senior transport experience and direct engagement with clients and elected members. The full-time vacancy considers locations across the UK office network. Government bus policy, transport appraisal and understanding of the sector’s political and economic context are essential.

What You'll Work On

  • Lead bus and BRT feasibility studies, coordinating scenarios, operating plans, costs, demand and revenue forecasts and business-case development for public-transport schemes.
  • Provide bus and rail strategy input at local, regional and national scales, applying understanding of policy, funding, governance and delivery reforms.
  • Develop investment cases for priority measures, interchanges, mobility hubs and Park and Ride, supporting clients’ BSIP and Enhanced Partnership ambitions.
  • Work with active-travel, Net Zero and development colleagues on corridor and regeneration proposals, maintaining client relationships and supporting business development.

Why This Role Matters

  • Public-transport investment decisions gain evidence on feasibility, operating costs and demand, helping clients assess proposed routes and infrastructure against delivery and funding conditions.
  • Bus priorities can be incorporated into wider corridor and regeneration plans through collaboration with active-travel and development teams, connecting public transport with place-based decisions.

What They Are Looking For

  • Domain: Essential experience includes UK government bus policy, transport reform, franchising, devolution, decarbonisation and associated political and economic factors.
  • Technical: Transport-planning principles and appraisal techniques are essential.
  • Stakeholder: Communication, report-writing and experience engaging project teams, clients and stakeholders are essential.
  • Preferred: Bus-network planning, datasets, multimodal software, business cases, UK rail reform and emerging mobility technologies are desirable.
  • Eligibility: Security clearance may be required; if so, UKSV may request evidence of five or more years of UK residency. Do not include current or previous clearance details in your application.
