Senior Software Engineer (back end)

Key Notes

At least five years’ software development and Java 11 or later are required for this SilverRail backend role. You’ll build rail-retail APIs and services, lead technical reviews and support other engineers. The full-time UK role is home based with one or two London office visits monthly, under the employer’s hybrid model. Spring, Spring Boot, ORM and microservice experience are required; UK residency and work rights without visa sponsorship apply.

What You'll Work On

  • Design and maintain scalable rail-retail services and APIs, translating business and technical requirements into reliable software with Product Owners and architects.
  • Develop tested backend components and resolve defects, improving application performance, security and maintainability across the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Lead code reviews and technical discussions, developing engineering standards and continuous improvements within SilverRail’s agile development teams.
  • Mentor engineers and coordinate QA and product partners, strengthening technical knowledge and delivery of customer-facing rail technology solutions.

What They Are Looking For

  • Experience: At least five years’ hands-on software development.
  • Technical: Java 11 or later, Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate or equivalent ORM and relational databases such as MySQL.
  • Technical: JSON and XML APIs, microservice and SaaS architecture, Git and CI/CD, and AI coding tools such as Claude Code.
  • Experience: Agile or Scrum working and clear technical influence, independent ownership and deadline management.
  • Eligibility: UK residency and the right to work without visa sponsorship, as specified in the job-specific application.
  • Preferred: NoSQL, REST, GitLab, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, event-driven architecture or domain-driven design are advantages.
